We’ve all experienced that "showroom envy" walking through IKEA—the perfect lighting, the clever use of space, and that effortless Nordic charm. But how do you translate that into a real Singaporean home?
Our latest project at 114 Bukit Batok proves that you don't need a massive budget to achieve a magazine-worthy look. By leaning into Minimalist Scandi design and professional styling, we turned this unit into a bright, airy sanctuary that feels like a permanent vacation in Copenhagen.
The design core of this Bukit Batok home is the Minimalist Scandi aesthetic. We focused on the "Three L’s": Light, Lines, and Layers. By utilizing a base of "Blonde" oak woods and crisp whites, we maximized the natural light flowing through the unit, creating a sense of openness that is essential for high-rise living in Singapore.
The living area is the soul of this home, where we focused on clean lines and architectural layers. To move away from the "flat" look of a standard unit, we introduced a custom false ceiling. We integrated recessed downlights and hidden cove lighting within the false ceiling. This allows the homeowners to shift from bright, functional lighting during the day to a soft, warm glow in the evening—perfect for that "Hygge" atmosphere. Instead of a traditional bulky console, we used a partition and shelving system to build up the feature wall. This adds a sense of "zoned" depth to the space. The open shelving provides a spot for curated IKEA-inspired decor, while the partition creates a sleek, architectural backdrop for the TV. We meticulously selected light oak wood-grain and matte bone-white laminates. These were chosen specifically to complement the light flooring and the soft grey furnishings, ensuring a seamless "tone-on-tone" transition that makes the living room feel significantly larger.
The kitchen at 114 Bukit Batok is where the "IKEA-inspired" look truly comes to life. This combination is a Scandi staple—it’s timeless, bright, and makes even a compact kitchen feel expansive. The biggest transformation at 114 Bukit Batok happened in the kitchen. We converted the traditional layout into a compact, high-efficiency cooking area that serves more than one purpose. Recognizing the need for versatility in modern Singaporean homes, we fabricated a bespoke high counter bar-style table. This isn't just for food prep; it’s a dedicated spot to catch up on emails or enjoy a slow morning coffee. We paired the high counter with sleek high stools to complement the minimalist aesthetic. This setup bridges the gap between the kitchen and the living area, creating a "cafe-at-home" vibe that is perfect for both work and relaxation. By using matching wood-tone laminates for the bar and the cabinetry, the kitchen feels unified and uncluttered, proving that even a compact area can feel incredibly premium.
For the bedrooms , the approach was slightly different. Rather than full-scale carpentry, our homeowners opted for high-quality off-the-shelf furniture to maintain a flexible and cozy feel. To ensure the furniture perfectly matched the Minimalist Scandi aesthetic, our design team took the lead in sourcing and styling. We handpicked the bedframe, side tables, and wardrobes to ensure they harmonized with the home’s color palette and wood tones, saving the owners time while achieving a cohesive "showroom" result. To elevate the room and meet the owners' love for a Romantic/Romanian-inspired ambiance, we fabricated a stunning French-style cornice ceiling. This subtle yet sophisticated architectural detail adds a touch of old-world charm and luxury, perfectly contrasting with the modern, clean lines of the sourced furniture.
The bathroom continues the home's visual language by prioritizing warmth and clean functionality. We gotten a aluminum off-shelf vanity cabinet and sink using a wood laminate that perfectly matches the rest of the house's "wood and white" theme. For the shower, we installed a practical shower kerb paired with a "two fixed, two sliding" shower screen system. This configuration maximizes space efficiency while maintaining a modern, streamlined look.
